About Me
Hey, my name is Emily Hedegard, and I am a double major in English and communications with a minor in writing at The University of New England. I am the Editor-in-Chief of UNE’s student paper, The Bolt. Before college, I wrote as an intern for The Saco Bay News and covered various topics, including the Black Lives Matter Movement and COVID-19. By choosing diverse subjects to write about, I am always learning or meeting someone new, which is what I love about journalism! Additionally, I worked as an intern, reference checking for Across The Disciplines from August 2022 to December 2023.
In the fall of 2023, I accepted an internship with the Portland Press Herald, allowing me to further immerse myself in journalism culture. In this role, I wrote over 45 stories ranging from ‘foodie’ guides to weekly columns. I was asked to intern for the Press Herald a second time in the spring of 2023. Over winter break, between the two internships, I was hired as a seasonal, part-time employee.
During the summer of 2024, I began working as an intern for The Maine Monitor, helping with development tasks like grant writing, event planning, and analyzing donor information. I also did some graphic design work, which blossomed into a part-time job with The Monitor. In my part-time role, I created Instagram reels, banner advertisements, social media posts, and website graphics. In the fall of 2024, I was also hired as a writing fellow for The Monitor, covering topics such as education and healthcare.
I am a lifelong Mainer and love to spend as much time outside as possible. I enjoy walking local trails, gardening, and doing yoga in my free time.
