Lepore QCQs
QCQ1: “Getting too close to your subject is a major danger, but not getting to know her well enough is just as likely”(129). It is hard to find a balance between knowing someone personally and simply knowing someone. This idea also balances with the concerns of manipulating emotions and relationships for information. To what level should a journalist become emotionally attached to their subject, and are journalists expected to become attached to a certain extent so as to not seem inhumane?
QCQ2: “Indeed, from their perspective, I had failed to get at the truth, while from mine, I had managed to retain intellectual control of my work”(136). Every story has many sides, but unfortunately not every side looks good in journalism. How can we truly expect the truth when we are not willing to read the unattractive sides of every story? And to what extent does “creative control” affect the truths of the writing?
