Boyer QCQs
QCQ1: “The shift toward business and away from the liberal arts has been described as the new vocationalism in higher education”(218) The technical aspects behind a degree are incredibly important. Yet we need to find a balance of the technical and structural aspects. How can higher education “properly” balance the vocational and logical roles in each degree and what would be considered a “proper” balance?
QCQ2: “work is basically the way that people seek to redeem their lives from futility. It therefore, requires the kind of world in which hope is possible, which is to say, the kind of world that yields to human effort”(223). I find myself constantly trying to create purpose from my work yet always seem to find myself disappointed by the end of the day. Hope is the one entity which drives work and knowledge as a means to create meaning in life. Should we consider our work the savior from a futile life and what would happen if we didn’t consider work the savior?
