The Bride Of Frankenstien Critique
The bride of Frankenstien is a film about the creation of a bride for Frankenstien’s monster. The sound film utilizes Franz Waxmen’s music to accentuate and dramatize. This simple combination of talking and background music moves the energy and emotions of the viewers. Much of the music uses heavy and slow rhythms which speed up in times of danger. This simple technique leaves viewers sitting on the edge of their seats. Furthermore, the use of light in this film is exquisite. Much of the film feels dark and shadowed over, creating an alluringly dangerous effect. The heavy shadowing and lighting of the film follows the dramatics of the plot to add a feeling of a creeping darkness throughout the film. The beginning of the climax began with a single quote from doctor pretorius, “Alone you have created a man, now together, we will create his mate”. This single quote helps begin to guide the viewers through the plot, building tensions in a simple, yet effective, way. Aside from the setup of plot and setting, Whale builds strong characters which the audience can easily root for. One example of this is the humanistic characteristics given to Frankenstein’s Monster. Although he grunts and groans for most of his lines, viewers are able to watch him fall in love with the simple pleasures of life. Creating a monster who wants food, drink, smoke, music, and a wife, allows the viewers to relate to the Monster and as such, become emotionally invested in the character. Put simply, the techniques used in this film just work. The use of close ups to dramatize and undramatized, along with the lighting, music, and language used in the film combines to create a “classic” horror film. Overall, The Bride of Frankeinstien was well created and worth the time it takes to watch.
