Bad Feminist
“Bad Feminist” by Roxane Gay features the role of a “true feminist”. Gay begins by introducing the term “essential feminism, the notion that there are right and wrong ways to be a feminist, and there are consequences for doing feminism wrong.”(Q) My initial emotion regarding this quote was shock, I was appalled by the idea of “doing feminism wrong”(R)(Q). Gay responds to this by stating that, “the most significant problem with essential feminism is how it doesn’t allow for the complexities of human experience or individuality”.(Q) By immediately countering “essential feminism” Gay begins building her argument for being a “bad feminist”. Gay quickly dilutes into a rant of her own “bad feminism”, in an attempt to convince readers that following social influences doesn’t necessarily translate into a refute of feminism. (C) Personally I agree with Gay that, essentially, feminism is the belief that women should be treated equally. For example if men aren’t socially required to shave, then women should also not have that social pressure. However, that doesn’t mean women cannot make the choice to shave. Simply put, it is important that free will is equal, however what is done with that free will should be up to the consumer.(E)(R) Another issue Gray brings to light is the discourse between feminism amongst all races and cultures of women, “Such willful ignorance and disinterest in incorporating the issues and concerns of black women into the mainstream feminist project makes me disinclined to own the feminist label until it embraces people like me.”(Q) This inconsistency in feminism concerns me(R). If feminism is the fight for equal rights of women, then that fight should include the rights of ALL women(E)(R). I wonder if there is a way to help redirect this animosity between feminists? How can we as a people form an equal society, one which includes every gender, race, etc?
