After reading “The Epistle Dedicatory ” in Oroonoko, I am interested in understanding the premise of the Novel. Behn explains that this story was not written to please the “poet” but to “render [the story] diverting, without the addition of intervention”. This introduction leads me to believe the story has been written with heavy intention set upon the themes and morals within the story. The statement regarding the “poet” leads me to believe that there is meant to be no embellishment to this book, it was simply as a vessel for the author’s intended lessons.The book was not necessarily written for pleasure, so our class dissection of the book seems to be the author’s main intention.  This leads me to wonder if Behn would appreciate this novel’s use in ENG229? The preface of this book makes me believe the dissection of this book is the only way to truly understand the story, which makes me excited to further understand the premise of the novel through this class.
