What makes it hard to include other people? What would we need to change to be more inclusive (individually and societally)? And could we categorize, but still be inclusive?
Not knowing somebody makes it hard to include them. Introducing somebody new into your life or your friend group requires a lot of trust. The fear of getting to know someone and letting someone get to know you can be daunting. If as a society we could all be open and trustworthy from the beginning, then there would be less worry about including someone new. Because we don’t know all the aspects of an individual, categorization becomes an easy way to make quick assumptions about whether that person is trustworthy. It is important to remember that categories are a gross overgeneralization, so to remain inclusive one must remember that not all the generalizations are true. Thus, categorization becomes ok as long as the categorizer understands that a category has no way of giving the full picture and remains open to individuality.
