Re-categorization Blog Post
“Why NBC Boston Anchor Latoyia Edwards Now Wears Braids on the Morning News” by Julia Taliesin focuses on the physical re-categorization of Edwards. Edwards was bound to her category by her hair. Because Edwards worked as news anchor she was expected to dress, style, and act a certain way on air. One specific thing she was asked to do was relax and straighten her natural hair. The production’s “image consults” felt the straightened hair would make her more “appealing” to all audiences. After her mother’s death, Edwards began to minimize her assets and realized how expensive the upkeep of her “appealing” hairstyle was. After braiding her hair on vacation one day she felt the liberty her job had taken away: the right to her natural hair. Edwards reached out to her higher ups at the station asking if she could begin to braid her hair. Surprisingly, she got a very positive response and had her hair braided as quickly as possible. No longer categorized by her white washed style, Edwards can show the world that “authentic representation matters.”

I love that Edwards received a positive response for the change she made. I think a lot of people in production focus to much on what fashion trends are popular (a lot of which are targeted more towards whites people) and greatly underestimate how much people like to see real representation in media. It is wonderful that Edwards is able to be more authentic on air, both for herself and for the people watching.
