Roper began as an avid member of the Westboro Baptist Church. She was picketing soldiers’ funerals and pride parades. After becoming active on twitter, Roper began to befriend people of different beliefs in an attempt to understand the “enemy.” As Roper began to get to know people outside of her church, she began to humanize the very type of people she used to scream slurs at during protests. Eventually, Roper began to understand the opposing views she found online and even began to question her own religion. After much deliberation Roper and her sister left the church. Roper recategorized herself as a less hateful person and no longer as a member of the Westboro Church.
