Editorial Reflection
After five rounds of the workshops, I have learned a lot about the right and wrong ways to write an article. For example, I learned that the appropriate paragraph length for feature articles is smaller than in other writing media. The smaller paragraphs make the piece easier to read (and write!). I also learned how to make comments and critiques as well. I was tentative to make comments at first because I didn’t really know how to explain my critiques. Similarly I was nervous about writing my critiques, because I wasn’t sure how to explain what felt off about each piece. However, over the last few weeks, I have begun to use terms like nut graph, lede, and hook in my daily vocabulary. Eventually, I was able to critique my peers on problems such as vagueness, tone, and description. I was also unsure how to balance the constructive comments with the positive comments. I was afraid to come off to positive and make someone think they had to edits to make, yet I was afraid I was upset someone if I was too negative. Finding a balance was a large tension for the workshops I participated in. Eventually I was able to give constructive feedback positively.
