Profile Reflection
Overall I enjoyed the profile project. When we first began pitching our ideas, I didn’t know who I wanted to write about for a profile. I tried to find someone I knew who was interesting, but as a first-year student, I didn’t know many of the staff. I pitched Prof. Klak, who taught my environmental class, and Gennaco, UNE’s DigiSpace coordinator, who I didn’t know. I ended up getting Gennaco, which made me a little nervous. I wasn’t sure how to write about someone I’d never met. I spent hours combing through her online profiles, old college records, and general articles about her. To be honest, this project made me feel like a stalker! I began to get to know Gennaco through her online presence and used that guidance to form my interview questions. I had a lot of anxiety going into the interview, but I used a little fake confidence, and we ended up having an enjoyable conversation for almost 50 minutes. The next step was for me to extract quotes from my recording of the interview. Listening to the same discussions for hours to make sure I got all of the quotes correct was the most time-consuming part of this project. After I had typed all of my favorite quotes, I created a nut graph and built the story from there. I re-read that draft at least 20 times, editing something each reading. Going into the workshop, I was excited for the feedback. The class ended up being a little quiet that day, but I still received plenty of helpful suggestions. I also emailed the draft to Gennaco to make sure she was ok with all of the quotes and information. Using feedback from both of those sources, I was able to edit my piece down to its ‘final’ form.
