“Authors coffin was

 a little frosted cake

and the red-eyed loon eyed it

from his white, frozen lake”

I chose this quote because I really enjoyed the play on colors Bishop uses. Throughout the poem, the author uses imagery( such as the loon, the coffin, marble, the snow, and the Lilly) in order to highlight the contrast between the loon’s red eyes and the bleakness of its surroundings. I found this to be very powerful and piercing, almost as if the loon was looking through the writing, and into the eyes of the reader.

What is the significance of the loon’s eyes? How does color play into the way a reader understands this piece?
