I found this chapter really interesting because of the emphasis on the audience. When giving a speech the speaker’s main goal is to express how they feel to a large audience. If done incorrectly, the speaker can become so focused on their subject that they forget their subjects. This chapter not only punctuates the need for an audience-adapted subject, it went in-depth about ways to connect the audience to the subject. One technique that this reading mentioned was creating a relationship connection/obligation with the listener, by building ethos and drawing personal connections to the larger group. In some ways I think this technique is a type of social manipulation, however, I cannot think of any negative effects of this method. Are there downsides to building “street cred” to connect with a large group? I am curious if some audience members would find this connection to be unappealing as opposed to connecting.
