Journal #13
I was really interested in the different types of leadership that this chapter talks about. I think that often, when leaders step into their role they feel like they should be task leaders. However, when I’m put into a leadership role, I tend to lean towards socioemotional traits. One way is not necessarily better than the other, so finding a way to balance the two is crucial in good leadership. Another subject I read about was different types of power. Although this concept is something I seem to innately understand, it is never something I have discussed before. The five types of power (legitimate, expert, referent, reward, and coercive) all work in different ways but not necessarily on their own. Many times, people use more than one type of power while in a group. Is one type of power better than the other? Why or why not? The final part of this chapter that resonated with me was the idea that “leadership is not a trait.” Because I am quiet, I have always been told that I do not have good leadership traits. So I guess you could say that I found some solace in this quote.
