QCQ#7
Q: “I was certain that this would be
better than farm life. I am
the family entrepreneur!”
C: There is a bitter-sweet nature that attracted me to this line. It almost reminds me of the expression, “the grass is greener on the other side,” which has always rubbed me the wrong way. It can be hard to be grateful for what you have and even more challenging to be grateful while you have it. It seems that this poem is about someone who ended up in an awful situation, maybe a circus or laboratory of some sort (there are references to flexible people, mice, and scientific equipment). As the writing continues, the subject seems more and more trapped in this new environment. I am curious if this poem, at least minimally, serves as a reminder to be grateful for what you have.
Q: Is the plot of the poem dramatized in an effort to form a lesson, a statement, or both?
