The first thing that stood out to me in this chapter is such a simple, yet often ignored courtesy: turning off a cell phone. In today’s world everyone has a phone, however not everyone was raised with technological manners. It is important to make sure your phone is silenced during an interview, or in any other important/professional setting. Having a phone go off can be portrayed as disrespectful, rude, or make you appear uninterested . Although this is something I am already aware of, I thought it was an important part if the chapter to bring to light. The second topic I wanted to hit on from this chapter was how to use voice in an interview. The book recommends standing or sitting up straight to strengthen your voice, as well as smiling to add a level of kindness/enthusiasm to your tone. I really liked that the book didn’t just say to use a strong and enthusiastic voice, but instead gave tips on how to do so. I have a somewhat soft spoken demeanor, so understanding ways in which I can improve that aspect of my communication was very helpful. The final topic of this chapter that I want to mention is a casual vs. professional interview. I tend to have some difficulty with finding a balance between casual and professional, so I lean my academic/work personality towards professional. How can I find a better balance of the two? When is it appropriate to be causal in an interview or professional setting, and what are the pros and cons of this?
