Comment: Although there isn’t really much of a quote at 0:58, there is a plethora of imagery. The video opened with a Black man and woman standing in front of The Mona Lisa. The couple is framed by the blue outline of the glass, almost as if they are immersing themselves in the art. They do not stand in front of the Mona Lisa; instead, they stand with her, furthering the concept that they are becoming part of the painting. Throughout the video, there are countless examples of this scenario happening; Beyonce and Jay Z embody statues, paintings, etc. All of the art shown is prominent in our Western culture, and the subjects are predominantly White men and women. By inserting themselves into the frame of the art, Beyonce and Jay Z make the statement that they ( and others of African descent) are inserting themselves into our Western culture and, therefore, opening up the experience for all races and ethnicities.
Question: Did the couple mean to do this, or is this interpretation an assumption based on their race? How would this music video be interpreted if the artist was White?
