Psych Up & Calm Down
Statement of Purpose:
I created this video as a personal tool to help my future self get both pumped up and calmed down before job, internship, and fellowship interviews. Interviews tend to make me anxious, and I often find myself overthinking in the moments leading up to them. This video serves as a way to counteract that anxiety by guiding me through a structured pre-interview routine (along with some goofy moments to help me blow off steam). To start, I intentionally take on a silly, lighthearted tone to break through any nerves my future self (or any viewer) might be feeling. By being goofy upfront, I aim to loosen any tension and remind myself not to take everything so seriously. Then, I encourage the viewer to briefly step away and engage in an energizing activity—listening to Eye of the Tiger—before transitioning into what I call “calm down mode.” This second part of the video focuses on grounding techniques. I guide the viewer through adopting a power stance, which can boost confidence and reduce stress. I also provide a structured approach to practicing interview answers and emphasize the importance of incorporating anecdotes and using effective framing techniques. I included specific anecdote examples in my first cut, but I ultimately decided to remove them to ensure the video remains relevant regardless of the job or time it’s being viewed. Additionally, to further promote relaxation, I incorporate breathing exercises, calming background music, and subtle, lighthearted editing choices (such as my playful end card) to create a reassuring atmosphere. My goal is to help the viewer (future me) smile, breathe, and shift their mindset from anxious overthinking to confident readiness.
